Polk County Middle dropped a 9-3 decision Monday to Apple Valley in the Blue Ridge Conference softball opener for both teams.
But that loss didn’t deter the enthusiasm of Polk head coach Jamie Graber for this year’s squad.
“Super proud of the girls,” Graber said. “It was a great first game. I know we are going to have a great season.”
The Wolverines scored three times in the fourth inning to take the initial lead, only to see the Knights rally for a 4-3 edge in the bottom of the fourth, then continue to build the lead the rest of the way.
Sarah Vitale and Kynley Lawter pitched for the Wolverines, with Elizabeth Vitale going 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the Polk offense.
Polk Middle is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Hendersonville Middle.
