Lawing’s pitching gem powers East Rutherford past Polk County

East Rutherford’s Hayley Lawing checked Polk County on three hits Tuesday to lead the Cavaliers to an 11-0 victory in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference softball action at Polk.

Lawing allowed a first-inning single to Amberlyn Scruggs, a second-inning single to Katelynn Arrowood and a sixth-inning single to Mia Bradley. She struck out eight and retired 13 straight batters at one point in the win.

The Cavaliers (16-3, 9-1) scored three runs in the second inning and continued to build upon that total in winning by run rule after six innings. Leadoff hitter Jenna Davis finished 5-for-5 to lead East, which has lost just once this season to an in-state team.

Polk County (8-9, 3-6) travels to East Rutherford on Friday for a rematch.
