Polk County's Laney Littlefield singled and homered in Tuesday's loss at Brevard

Brevard staves off Polk County comeback to claim 7-5 win

Polk County spent nearly all of Tuesday’s Mountain Foothills 7 Conference game in Brevard working to overcome an early Blue Devil lead.

And the Wolverines very nearly did just that.

Brevard finally subdued a determined Polk squad, pulling out a 7-5 victory over the Wolverines in a conference matchup.

The Blue Devils (15-7, 6-5) scored four runs in the first inning, only to see Polk County (8-12, 3-8) cut that deficit to 4-3 by the third inning.

Second-inning walks to Amberlyn Scruggs and Sarah Vitale, followed by RBI grounders by Elizabeth Vitale and Ada Kelley, helped Polk score its first two runs. Laney Littlefield’s third-inning home run then trimmed the Brevard lead to one.

The Blue Devils added three runs in the fifth inning to push the lead back to 7-3, but the Wolverines still had another rally remaining.

Miya Jackson singled to open the seventh, though she was retired for the first out on Mia Bradley’s fielder’s choice. Littlefield singled, and Chloe Young reached on an error that scored Bradley. Amberlyn Scruggs then drove in Littlefield, but that would be it for Polk as Brevard got the inning’s final two outs to seal the win.

Littlefield and Sarah Vitale each finished 2-for-4, with Scruggs and Kayleigh Wilson adding hits.

The two teams meet again Thursday at Polk County in the Wolverines’ regular-season finale.
