Polk County softball coach Phillip Miller

Owen broke open a close game with a sixth-run sixth inning Friday and handed Polk County a 9-3 defeat in a non-conference softball game in Swannanoa.

The Warhorses (3-0) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth before putting together their outburst.

Polk County (1-2) answered with two runs in the seventh as Ada Kelley was hit by a pitch and Mia Bradley and Sarah Vitale laced singles.

The Wolverines scored their other run in the fourth inning as Chloe Young drew a walk, Kayleigh Wilsin singled and an error on a Kelley at-bat allowed Young to score.

Vitale finished 2-for-4, with Bradley and Wilson each adding one hit.

Polk County is set to begin Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Patton.
