Polk Middle's Emma Hayford

Rugby Middle has romped past all of its opponents this season in Blue Ridge Conference play – and showed Polk Middle exactly why on Wednesday.

The undefeated Raiders exploded for 13 runs in the third inning, rolling to a 16-0 victory over the Wolverines at Polk County Recreation Complex.

Rugby (10-0) tallied three runs in the first, but still had just that three-run margin when the third inning began. But the Raiders took advantage of three hits, four walks and five errors, sending 17 batters to the plate in the third inning.

Rugby held Polk Middle (4-3-1) without a hit in the three-inning game.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Thursday in Mills River.
