12-run outburst drives Polk Middle to three-inning win

Polk County Middle had a dozen reasons Monday to be excited about its win at Apple Valley.

The Wolverines scored 12 runs in the second inning, setting the stage for a 15-0, three-inning victory over the Knights in Hendersonville.

Polk Middle (1-0-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Kenzie Alm walked and scored on Lucy Tessnair’s one-out triple. Tessnair then scored on a wild pitch for Polk’s early two-run advantage.

Then came the second inning. Mary Marrow opened the inning with a triple, and Minda McComas and Amiyah Waters were each hit by pitches to load the bases. Alm singled to score a run, and Emma Hayford was hit by a pitch to make it 4-0.

Bases still loaded, Tessnair drew a walk to force in a run and Izzy Young’s fielder’s choice plated another. Hayford scored on a wild pitch and Camdyn Isreal-Garrett was hit by a pitch before Addison Queen laced a two-run double to make it 9-0.

Marrow reached on a hit by pitch and McComas walked before Waters drilled another two-run double to make it 11-0. Alm singled to score McComas and Waters and later scored on a Tessnair single to give the Wolverines a 14-0 edge.

Polk added a final run in the third as Israel-Garrett scored on a Marrow grounder.

Alm and Tessnair each finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Young, Queen, Marrow and Waters each added base hits.

Tessnair pitched two innings to earn the win, striking out four. McComas pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Polk Middle returns home Wednesday to face Hendersonville Middle in a 4:30 p.m. game at Polk County Recreation Complex.
