Polk County Middle School head girls basketball coach Michelle Fagan is seeing daily improvement from the Wolverines, which gives her hope that there soon won’t be days like Monday.
Pressuring Polk County from the outset, Rugby pulled away for a 42-15 victory in a Blue Ridge Middle School Conference game at Polk Middle.
The Raiders (2-1) built a 21-6 halftime lead and continued to pull away throughout the second half, its starting lineup playing most of the game and effectively scoring on fast-break opportunities to pad the lead.

“We just had a had time with their pressure in the first half,” said Fagan, in her first season with the Polk Middle program. “It’s hard to recover from that.
“We’re getting better every day. We’re definitely much better than we were at the start of the season. We’ve got to keep working. That’s why we’re here. We’re going to continue to push on working on our fundamentals and game situations.”
Bre Kenan scored six points and Ansley Lynch had five for Polk County (0-3), which returns to action on Wednesday at Apple Valley. Mariah Overholt and Mikayla Staley each added two points.
“We’re not going to get down on ourselves,” Fagan said. “We’re going to refocus on correcting our mistakes.”
