Polk girls smother Eagles in defensive masterpiece

For a coach who constantly preaches the value of defense, Wednesday could not have been a more rewarding evening for Brandy Alm.

Polk County turned in a defensive gem, holding East Henderson to five second-half points en route to a 57-15 rout of the visiting Eagles at Polk County.

East Henderson, now 4-3, entered the non-conference matchup minus two starters sidelined due to injury, but it might not have mattered much against a Wolverine squad that never allowed more than six points in any quarter.

Polk County (6-2) roared to a 19-6 lead at the end of the first period, with senior Sarah Phipps controlling the middle and scoring nine of her game-high 17 points in the quarter. Phipps also had nine rebounds as the Wolverines dominated the boards as well in the game, with Hayley Kropp also grabbing nine rebounds and Autumn Owen adding seven.

“We played a lot of defenses. We changed up quite a bit,” Alm said. “We wanted to work on some different types of defenses.

“We ran our transition well, but that comes in part from playing such good defense. We got after it.”

Up 31-10 at halftime, Polk County allowed East to score only two points in the second half until the Eagles nailed a long 3-pointer just before the final buzzer.

Kropp finished with 15 points and India Godlock had 12 points and four steals for Polk County. Kara Overholt and Savannah Ross each had five assists for the Wolverines, who return to action Friday at Mountain Heritage in a Western Highlands Conference game.
