Perhaps fatigued from Tuesday’s win at Landrum, Polk County found baskets tough to come by in the first half of Wednesday’s matchup with East Henderson.
Fortunately, Sarah Phipps was there to collect most of the errant attempts.
Phipps matched a school record with 21 rebounds and Lyric Flood scored a team-high 14 points to lead Polk County to a 51-27 non-conference win over East Henderson in action at Polk.

Phipps tied the school record set by Jamie Hrobak, grabbing 15 defensive rebounds and six on the offensive end. She also scored 11 points and Janada Carson added 10 as the Wolverines improved to 5-1.
“I thought we came out a little flat,” said Polk County head coach Craig Culbreth “We had a big game at Landrum last night, and our legs were tired.
“We went to a little matchup zone in the second half. We were able to force some turnovers and hit some shots.”
The Wolverines controlled the flow of play much of the first half, but still led just 17-14 with two minutes left in the first half. Hayley Kropp scored a three-point play the traditional way, with a bucket and free throw, before Flood buried a 3-pointer for the key for a 23-14 lead. Carson and Flood then added late baskets to give Polk a 27-14 halftime lead.
The Wolverines then exploded in the third period, building a 51-27 margin by period’s end. Flood scored seven points in a Wolverine 13-5 run midway through the quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.
“We played two tough games back-to-back, and it showed,” Culbreth said. “It’s good to come out and not shoot well and still get the win.”
