In the wake of Monday’s last-second loss to North Henderson, Polk County head coach Brandy Alm said the experience would likely benefit the Wolverines at some point later this season.
It didn’t make learning the lesson any easier.
North Henderson’s Jonnie Petree drilled a 3-pointer with two seconds left to lift the Knights to a 45-42 win over the Wolverines in a non-conference game at Polk County.

North Henderson (10-4) trailed by 10 early in the fourth quarter, but ramped up its defensive pressure and didn’t allow Polk County to score a basket in the final 7:47 of the period, the Wolverines held to six points on free throws.
North Henderson still trailed by five, 41-36, with two minutes left, but evened the score st 42-42 on Teevin Bullock’s layup with 44 seconds remaining.
Polk’s Hayley Kropp then raced upcourt and drove the lane, but was whistled for a charge with 34 seconds left. North then held the ball for a final shot, which Petree took from the right wing, just behind the 3-point stripe, and buried. Time ran out before Polk could inbound the ball.
The Wolverines (7-6) built a 25-19 halftime lead, led by Kara Overholt’s 11 first-half points, and stretched the lead to 10 points by the middle of the third period. The lead remained at 10, 36-26, when Kropp scored a layup to open the fourth period.
Overholt finished with 14 points and five steals, with Kropp adding 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Caroline Marsh scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the final quarter to lead North Henderson.
