Alm pleased with lone preseason outing for Polk County girls hoops squad

New Polk County head girls basketball coach Brandy Alm got a preseason look Tuesday night at her Wolverines against outside competition.

She liked what she saw.

Polk County trekked to South Carolina for a preseason scrimmage with a pair of Greenville County schools, Woodmont and Hillcrest. The outing marked the only preseason action for the Wolverines, who open the regular season on Nov. 20 at Brevard.

“Both were very physical teams,” Alm said. “We played extremely hard, moved the ball well and created turnovers. We saw many positive things and things we need to improve on, but that is precisely what scrimmage games are for.”

The Wolverines return a pair of all-conference players in Sarah Phipps and Hayley Kropp as well as the bulk of last season’s squad, with only two seniors graduating from that team, which finished 13-11 and qualified for the state 2A playoffs. Senior Kara Overholt, the team’s leading scorer as a sophomore, also returns after a year’s absence from the program.

“We  were impressed with the improvement and adjustments each player made throughout the night,” Alm said. “This is a very coachable, hard working group of girls and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
