Polk County’s girls golf team delivered one of its best efforts of the season Monday, finishing second in the Western Highlands Conference Tournament at Mountain Glen Golb Club in Newland.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 296, still well behind conference champion Avery, who finished the day with a 250. But Polk easily bested Owen (328), Mitchell (329) and Hendersonville (344) to finish as the conference runners-up.
Charley Dusenbury led Polk’s effort, posting a 15-over 87. Dusenbury had a 40 on the second nine, parring six of the nine holes.

Addie Buss finished with a 104 and in ninth place and Reeve Carroll had a 105 on the challenging Mountain Glen course to round out the team scoring for the Wolverines.
Sofie Abrahamsen added a 115 and Chloe McGill had a 124 for Polk.
Avery’s Sydney Kulhan topped the field with a 79, followed by Mountain Heritage’s Mallie Buchanan, who carded an 80. Avery’s Molly Forbes had an 82 to finish third, with teammate Kendall Kulhan finishing fifth behind Dusenbury with an 89.
Polk County will conclude its regular season on Wednesday, hosting teams at Tryon Country Club beginning at 2 p.m. in a tourmanent rescheduled from earlier this season.
