Oxtoby claims WHC singles championship

Mission complete for Polk County’s Tyler Oxtoby.

The Wolverine senior captured the Western Highlands Conference singles championship on Tuesday at Avery, capping a good day for the Polk tennis program.

Oxtoby defeated Mountain Heritage’s Robin Stith 10-2 in the championship match, avenging a 10-8 loss to Stith last week at Polk County.

Polk’s Henry Monts very nearly knocked out Stith in the semifinals, dropping a 10-8 decision. But Monts still qualified for the 2A West Regional, as did Oxtoby, set for May 6 at Gardner-Webb.

Joining Oxtoby and Monts in the regional will be the doubles team of Payton Stott and Alec Becker, who also qualified after reached the tourney semifinals before dropping a tiebreaker and a 9-8 decision to a team from Avery.

Polk’s other doubles team, Malik Miller and Rustin Muse, suffered an 8-3 loss in the opening round.
