Owen perhaps caught Polk County’s boys tennis team at the right time Monday, knocking off the Wolverines 5-4 in a key Western Highlands Conference match at Polk.
Returning from spring break, the Wolverines (7-6, 5-2) suffered just their second conference loss of the season. Polk County hosts Mountain Heritage on Tuesday in its final WHC match of the season.
Had Polk defeated Owen, Tuesday’s match would have given the Wolverines a shot at at least sharing the WHC regular-season title with a win.
“I am heartbroken over this loss,” said Polk County head coach Richard Davis. ” I suppose one would say ‘hey, be happy with a second place finish.’ But that’s not my mode of thinking.”
Owen was able to split the day’s six singles matches, then picked up a pair of doubles wins to secure the match.
