Cougars bump Wolverines from state 3A boys tennis playoffs

Polk County’s season came to an end Wednesday with a 7-2 loss to Mountain Heritage in the first round of the 3A state boys tennis playoffs in Bunrsville.

The Cougars won four of six singles matches and swept doubles play to advance in the state tournament.

Mountain Heritage’s David Sink defeated Harris Windsor 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Adrian Melecio topped Charlie Wagoner 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Kevin Fernandez beat Jacob Jenne 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Josh Fernandez downed Isaac Hodges 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.

Polk County’s victories came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Morgan Allen defeated Emmet Oesch 6-4, 6-4, and Ethan Jenne beat Niko Theodorides 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Melecio and Kevin Fernandez topped Windsor and Wagoner 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1. Sink and Theodorides defeated Jenne and Allen 8-6 at No. 2, and Oesch and Oscar North edged E. Jenne and Hodges 6-5 at No. 3.

Mountain Heritage improved to 8-8, while Polk County finished the season 3-7.
