Wolverines unable to keep pace with Warhorses in road setback

Owen showed Wednesday why the Warhorses are considered one of the top teams in the area this season, handing Polk County an 8-1 setback in a non-conference boys soccer clash in Swannanoa.

The Warhorses (8-1) grabbed a 4-0 halftime lead, though Polk County’s offensive pressure did create some scoring chances that the Wolverines (1-5-1) were unable to convert.

Owen upped the lead to 7-0 in the second half before Polk County finally broke through. Freshman Nathaniel Martinez played a perfect pass through the Owen defense to Cole Pereira, who stuck a drive in the lower left corner of the Owen net for the Wolverines’ lone goal of the evening.

“We competed the first 20 minutes,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “I really liked what I saw.”

Greyson Ball had 23 saves, including stopping a penalty kick in the first half.

Another challenge awaits Polk County on Thursday as undefeated Hibriten visits for a 6 p.m. meeting. The Panthers are the top-rated team in the NCHSAA 3A West RPI rankings.
