Wolverines make early goals stand in 2-1 season-opening win

Nothing like a solid performance in a win at home to open the season.

That’s exactly what Polk County Middle School’s boys soccer team delivered Wednesday, controlling play for much of the match with Macon Middle en route to a 2-1 victory at Polk.

The Wolverines aggressively pushed the ball into Macon’s end of the field until the final 15 minutes, passing effectively to create a handful of scoring opportunities. Sam Korzelius and Cameron Kempton each netted first-half goals for Polk County, which held a 2-0 lead at the break.

“For the first game, I thought we played well and worked hard. Everybody gave a good effort,” said Polk County head coach Travis Aldred.

Polk County’s defense kept Macon at bay for much of the match, the Panthers getting few good shots, until Macon scored off a direct kick near the penalty area with about 10 minutes left in the match. The Panthers continued to press for the tying goal, but the Wolverines were able to turn aside each threat.

The Wolverines will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Brevard Middle School.

“Our goal is to do at least as well as last year,” Aldred said. “I’m looking forward to a great season.”
