Veteran Wolverines lead Polk Middle in lopsided opener

Experience is a luxury this season for Polk County Middle School boys soccer coach Travis Aldred, seven players returning from last season’s squad that posted a 7-4-1 regular-season record.

The Wolverines showed Monday how valuable those backgrounds may be.

Polk Middle scored early and often, rolling to an 8-0 win over Madison Middle in the season opener for both teams at Polk County Middle School.

The Wolverines built a 3-0 lead, then peppered a constant barrage of shots at the Madison goal in the second half to build the huge final margin.

“I thought we played well for the first game,” Aldred said. “In the second half we were a lot better with our ball movement. We still struggled a little bit with our positioning and our finishing, but overall I’m pleased for the first game.”

The Wolverines are at home again on Wednesday, hosting Brevard Middle as Polk County continues to gear up for tradtional Blue Ridge Middle School Conference powers such as Flat Rock and Hendersonville.

“I’m looking forward to a good season,” Aldred said. “Each match is going to get tougher, starting Wednesday.”
