Polk boys down Mitchell to clinch 2A soccer playoff berth

Polk County assured itself of a spot in the 2A state boys soccer playoffs on Tuesday, downing Mitchell 6-3 in a Western Highlands Conference match in Bakersville.

With the win, the Wolverines improved to 11-5-2 overall, 9-3 in WHC play. Polk County finished tied for second with Hendersonville in the WHC standings, with the top two teams earning automatic playoff berths. Based on league rules, Polk County wins the tiebreaker with Hendersonville by virtue of its win last week over Owen, according to conference officials.

The Wolverines built a 5-0 halftime lead over the Mountaineers (0-14, 0-12).

Scoring goals for Polk County were Hunter Hilbig, Wil Rimer, David Sanchez, Bradley Osborn, Isaias Akers and Garrett Weicker.

Polk County concludes its regular-season schedule Wednesday, hosting Crest on Senior Night. Junior varsity play begins at 5 p.m. at Polk County Middle School, with the varsity to follow at roughly 7 p.m.
