Late penalty kick lifts Smoky Mountain past Polk, 2-1
Smoky Mountain scored a late goal Wednesday to earn a 2-1 win over Polk County in a non-conference soccer match at Polk.
Chris Henson scored on a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match to give the Mustangs the win. Smoky Mountain improved to 3-1 with the victory.
After allowing an early goal, Polk County (1-2) evened the match early in the second half on a David Sanchez goal. Jeremy Allsbrook had the assist.
Larry Dyer had two saves in goal for Polk County as the Wolverines continued with their planned rotation of goalkeepers in the early portion of the season.
The Mustangs earned a 3-1 in the junior varsity game.
Polk County returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Madison in its Western Highlands Conference opener. Varsity play is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
