Polk County Middle’s boys soccer team gave veteran head coach Lennox Charles his first middle school win on Wednesday, topping Brevard Middle 3-2 in Blue Ridge Conference action at Polk Middle.
The Wolverines (1-0-1), grabbed a 2-0 lead at the half on goals by Elliott Whiteside, the first assisted by Topher Pearson, the second on an assist from Evan Jones.
Brevard (1-1) fought back in the second half and evened the match with some 10 minutes remaining. But Cole Perierra scored with less than two minutes remaining on an assist from Yan Ramirez to give the Wolverines the win.
“We again played really well on offense in the first half, and struggled some in the second,” said Charles, in his first season at Polk County Middle after 15 seasons leading the Polk County High School program. “However the team did a lot better job on defense today.”
Polk Middle opened its season on Monday with a 2-2 tie at Macon Middle. Pearson and Alexis Gonzalez scored the goals for the Wolverines, with Jones and Carson Metcalf recording assists.
Polk Middle returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Rugby for a 4:30 p.m. match.
