Polk Middle nearly overcame a sluggish start Wednesday, clawing back from a 15-point halftime deficit to fall 41-37 to Rugby Middle in a Blue Ridge Conference boys basketball game at Polk.

The Wolverines (4-5) managed just two points in the first quarter, quickly falling behind 16-2. Rugby (5-4) extended that advantage to 29-14 at the half.

But Polk Middle found its offensive rhythm in the second half, surging to nearly have a shot at a comeback victory.

“Without being able to practice the last few days, we had a tough first half but fought back in the second,” said Polk Middle head coach Brad Muse. “I’m disappointed with the loss but proud of the way they stayed in the fight to the last seconds of the game.”

Hollis Williams had 17 points to pace Polk Middle, with Kayden Pressley adding 11. RJ Simpson had four points, Owen Justice had three and Brennan Oates added two.

The Wolverines return to the court on Thursday, hosting Flat Rock Middle.
