Overtime was not a good time Tuesday for Polk County’s boys basketball team.
Cosby (Tenn.) outscored Polk County 10-5 during the extra period Tuesday afternoon, enabling the Eagles to take an 88-83 win in the consolation round of the Holidays on the Hardwood basketball tournament in Cherokee.
Polk County (3-7) will face Western Highlands Conference rival Owen on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the tournament’s seventh-place game. All games are being played at Cherokee High School.

The shootout included a new school record for Wolverine senior Jamal Wheeler, who broke his own mark for points in a game, scoring 44 as Polk County held its own with the high-scoring Eagles (10-2). Cosby has now scored at least 75 points in nine of its 12 games.
Cosby built a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, led 37-26 at halftime and extended the lead to 18 points in the third period before Polk County exploded, scoring 33 points in the quarter. Polk County not only made up the 18-point deficit in the period, but took a 59-53 lead into the fourth quarter.
Wes Mullis added 15 points and Holden Owens had 10 for the Wolverines, which also received six points from Dillion Overholt, four from Jaymes Wingo, three from Brandon Bacher and one from Davis Derkach. Polk County had 10 3-pointers in the game.
Kurry Cody led four Cosby players in double figures with 22 points.
Unofficially, the two teams took a combined 151 field-goal attempts in the game.
