Polk County's Ashley Kropp and teammates will now face Madison in the semifinals of the Western Highlands Conference tournament.

Weather leads WHC officials to trim basketball tourney to top four seeds

2 min read

Western Highlands Conference athletic directors and administrators decided Wednesday to try to play an abbreviated version of the league’s postseason basketball tournament, with only the top four girls and boys teams involved.

With snow falling Wednesday morning on some of the member schools and roads still icy in many parts of the league, WHC officials decided to effectively drop the first round of the tournament. The conference will now try to hold boys and girls semifinals on Thursday at Mountain Heritage, with action beginning at 4 p.m. If those games are played, then the championship games would be played Friday.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association currently requires all tournament games to be completed by Friday. The NCHSAA is meeting Wednesday to discuss possibly extending that deadline to Saturday, and if so, the WHC could potentially play its games on Friday and Saturday if weather doesn’t permit the semifinals to be played on Thursday.
