Polk girls roll, boys fall at Hendersonville

Polk County’s girls basketball squad wrapped up fourth place in the Western Highlands Conference and ensured a winning regular season with a 52-30 win Friday night at Hendersonville.

The Wolverines built a 30-11 halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half en route to their third consecutive victory.

Hayley Kropp scored 16 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists and Savannah Ross had 11 points to lead the Wolverines.

The Wolverines (11-9, 5-6) wrap up the regular season on Monday at Owen. Hendersonville dropped to 5-16, 1-10.

Polk County will also face Owen in the opening round of the WHC tournament at Hendersonville. That game is tentatively set for Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In boys play, Hendersonville earned a 57-50 win. The victory ensures that Polk County will be the seventh seed entering the WHC tourney, meaning Polk will face the league’s No. 2 seed in the opening round, tentatively set for Wednesday at 5 p.m. That team is still to be determined.

The game was close throughout and Polk County entered the fourth quarter tied with Hendersonville.

“We had three straight shots go in and out while we were trailing 53-50,” said head coach Josh McEntire. “We played a lot better on defense. We just went cold in the second half.”

Anthony Carson led Polk County with 11 points.

The Wolverines dropped to 2-9, 6-14 with the loss. Hendersonville improved to 4-7, 7-14 with the win.
