Khalil Austin had two baskets Wednesday for Polk County’s junior varsity. Neither could have come at a better time.
Austin scored five points in the final minute, helping push the Wolverines to a 36-32 victory over R-S Central and notch the team’s first win of the season.
Polk County (1-6) trailed 31-29 entering the final two minutes. David Duffy evened the score at the 1:21 mark with a pair of free throws, and the Wolverines got the ball back with a minute remaining.
Coming out of a timeout, Austin drilled a 3-pointer from the left win to give Polk a 34-31 lead. The Hilltoppers pulled within two on a free throw with 32 seconds left, and had another possession that ended in a turnover. Austin then scored on a fast-break layup following that miscue to seal the win for the Wolverines.
Cooper Rhodes led Polk County with 12 points, with Duffy and Khristian Littlejohn each scoring eight. Austin had those five key points, with Chase Stansbury adding three.
Polk County will host Burns on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
