
Avery built a 10-point halftime lead Friday and went on to hand Polk County a 31-19 setback in the junior varsity boys basketball season opener for both teams in Newland.
The Vikings built a 16-6 margin at intermission, but the Wolverines began to find their offensive touch in the second half.
Polk kept the margin in single digits in the second half, but Avery checked each rally and pulled away to seal the win.
Chase Stansbury had seven points to lead Polk County, with Khalil Austin adding six. Jonathan Collier finished with four points, with Khristian Littlejohn scoring two.
The two teams meet again Tuesday at Polk County in the Wolverines’ home opener.
