Friday roundup: Darden, Collins win Waldrop events; Polk baseball falls

Matthew Darden placed first in the 200-meter dash and Jacob Collins won the 3200-meter run to lead Polk County performances in Friday’s Tony Waldrop Invitational at Polk County High School.

The meet was not officially scored as a team event, so no team scores were kept.

Darden posted a time of 23.10, fastest of the day by a full second. Collins had the top 3200 time with a 10:49.80, finishing almost nine seconds ahead of Landrum’s Ben Boatwright. Polk’s Mitchell Brown was third in the event.

Brevard opens early lead, defeats Wolverines

Brevard scored six runs in the first two innings Friday and went on to take an 8-4 win over Polk County in the Wolverines’ home opener.

The Blue Devils opened a 8-1 lead after five innings before Polk County (0-2) added three runs in the sixth inning.

Konnor Scruggs went 1-for-2 to lead Polk County, which returns to action on Tuesday at Asheville Christian Academy.
