A pair of seniors leading their respective teams have been named the PolkSports.com/Bradley Screen Printing players of the week.
Senior baseball player Wes Brady led the Wolverines to two conference wins last week and had a pair of hits in Polk County’s 9-5 loss to Christ School. In the Wolverines’ 8-5 win at Mitchell, Brady homered and was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Senior golfer Will Ballard finished as medalist in both of Polk County’s matches last week, including an event involving six Western Highlands Conference teams at Grassy Creek in Spruce Pine. Ballard had a 2-over-par 74 in that event, then posted a 75 to win a three-team event at Tryon Country Club.
For the week before Polk County’s spring break, a trio of Polk County track team members were chosen as the players of the week for their efforts in the Western Highlands Conference meet at Wolverine Stadium. Matthew Darden took first place in four events, winning the 200 and 400-meter dashes and running on Polk’s winning 4×400 and 4×200-meter relay teams. Freshman India Godlock won three events, taking the 400 and 800-meter runs and running the anchor leg for the 4×400-meter squad. Junior D.J. Twitty won the shot put and qualified for the 2A Western Regional with a throw that exceeded his personal record by four feet.
