Polk County's Efrain Rivera works to defeat Hendersonville's David Summey during Tuesday's match

Polk County entered most of its wrestling matches earlier this season already down six points with no one wrestling in the 190-pound class.

Former coach Jamie Thompson, as he so often does, had an idea how to get that fixed.

“Coach Thompson is really good at recruiting as far as helping me in the hallways,” said current Polk head coach Thomas Hensley. “He’s like, you need to just go recruit a 190.

“I saw Luke Miller in the hallway one day and said, ‘Hey, Luke, come out and wrestle.’ He said, ‘I’ll be there today,’ Just that easy, casual conversation.”

Things seem to be falling into place just like that this season for Polk. Miller went 3-0 during Tuesday’s quad meet held at Polk County Middle School and the Wolverines did the same, defeating Hendersonville (72-9), A.C. Reynolds (72-3) and Forest Hills (72-12) in dominant fashion.

The win over the Bearcats came in Polk County’s Mountain Foothills 7 Conference opener, adding to Hensley’s satisfaction with the evening’s outcomes.

“Giving up 24 points total and then whatever we scored, I’ll take that, for sure,” Hensley said. “To get a good start in the conference obviously means a lot. Hendersonville beat us three times last year. They graudated a lot of talent, but their coaches do a really good job there. It’s always really good to beat them.”

The Wolverines held Alumni Night on Tuesday, inviting former players and coaches to attend the meet and be recognized. Among those present was Forest Hills head coach Joshua Metcalf, who placed second in the 2010 2A state tournament as a Polk County wrestler.

Metcalf and fans got to see the entirety of the Polk County program on display.

“Every single kid got a match tonight, whether it was junior varsity or varsity,” Hensley said.

Polk County will wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule starting Thursday, traveling to Mallard Creek High School to compete in the two-day Elizabeth Barry Memorial Clash at the Creek.
