Polk County’s wrestling team made a statement in its season debut, capturing the team title at Saturday’s fourth annual Plowboy Brawl at Chase.
The Wolverines finished with 194.5 points to outdistance runner-up R-S Central’s 160.5 in the 15-team field. West Caldwell (115.0), North Gaston (111.0) and East Gaston (105.5) rounded out the top five.
Polk County claimed three individual championships and seven other top-four finishes.

Carson Bell (157 pounds) and Zalen McCraw (175) each went 4-0 to win their weight classes. Bell opened with a 22-second pin of Burns’ Hunter Thomas, then pinned West Caldwell’s Deegan Crisp in 1:13 in the quarterfinals. He followed with a 1:04 pin of Crest’s Luke Cross in the semifinals before claiming the title with a 2:42 pin of East Rutherford’s Alex Lane.
Zalen McCraw pinned North Gaston’s Keldon Williams in 2:00 in the quarterfinals, stopped Crest’s Levi Cross in 39 seconds in the semifinals and finished his day by pinning East Henderson’s Santino Dela Torre in 52 seconds in the championship match.
Brody Wolfe (150) won three matches before falling in the finals. Wolfe pinned East Rutherford’s Thailand Turner in 46 seconds, then defeated South Mecklenburg’s Randy Solis by pin in 4:35 in the quarterfinals. He posted a 14-6 major decision over North Gaston’s Kaden Brown in the semifinals before Hendersonville’s Alexander May pinned him in 3:15 in the title match.
Liam Jackson finished second at 126 pounds, defeating teammate Jayden Pons 14-8 in the quarterfinals before pinning South Mecklenburg’s August Glanker in 1:15 in the semifinals. Burns’ Kale Oates edged Jackson 6-3 in the championship match.
Amon Villarreal (132) also claimed second place, pinning R-S Central’s Ayden Laws in 5:08 in the quarterfinals and edging North Gaston’s Louis Scott 6-5 in the semifinals. R-S Central’s Bryson Davis won the title with a 14-5 major decision over Villarreal.
Styler Blackwell (190) advanced to the finals with a 1:14 pin of Andrews’ Hayden Virtanen in the semifinals before falling to West Caldwell’s Lathan Dula 6-4.
The Wolverines placed four wrestlers in third. Jaxtyn Virgil (144) went 4-1 on the day, winning three matches by pin and one by technical fall before claiming third with a 10-4 decision over Burns’ Trenton Blow. Zach McCraw (165) finished 3-1, earning third with a 2:13 pin of Hendersonville’s Isaac Henderson.
Cole Huntley (113) and Isaiah Staley (215) each finished fourth.
