
Polk County’s wrestling team battled one of the top programs in Western North Carolina to the end Wednesday, dropping a 43-36 decision at North Henderson.
The Knights are ranked among the top 3A teams in the state at present by many, but the Wolverines held their own, with three forfeits ultimately making a key difference in the final outcome.
Polk County got wins by pin from Tori Strickland, Banks Barber, Collier Foster, Shatter Johnson, Jaydyn Virgil and John Wright.
The Wolverines will take part beginning Friday in the two-day Great Smoky Mountains Grapple at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville. A number of top teams from throughout the Southeast are expected to compete in the event, which will include boys varsity, girls varsity and boys junior varsity divisions.
