Western Highlands Conference wrestling results: Mitchell dominates final round

A buzz ran through Polk County’s gymnasium Friday night when team scores in the Western Highlands Conference wrestling tournament were announced prior to the start of the championship round.

Only because Madison, not regular-season champion and defending state 1A champion Mitchell, led the team race entering the final round.

The Mountaineers, though, made certain that deficit didn’t last long, winning eight individual titles – including a perfect 5-0 against Madison finalists – en route to winning the team tournament title on a long evening of competition that ended shortly before midnight.

Led by conference wrestler of the year Levi Richardson, Mitchell wrestlers went 8-3 in the championship round. Madison wrestlers claimed three titles, with Avery grabbing two and Hendersonville one.

Madison’s Peyton Robert was named the tournament’s top wrestler, while Mitchell’s Ed Duncan earned WHC coach of the year honors.
