Virgil splits Friday matches, stays alive in 2A 182-pound consolation bracket

Polk County’s Jadyn Virgil is one of the final eight wrestlers remaining in the 2A 182-pound class at the NCHSAA 87th Annual Individual Wrestling State Tournament in Greensboro.

Virgil dropped his Friday quarterfinal match to Southwest Onslow’s Jason Rodriguez Jr., but rebounded to score a decision over Shelby’s Izreal Wrighton in a consolation-round match.

That moved Virgil into the consolation quarterfinals, where he will wrestle Saturday morning against Nathan Tucker of Burns. Tucker, a senior, owns a 28-7 record.

Rodriguez recorded his second straight win by technical fall, defeating Virgil 15-0. But Virgil rebounded in the consolation round to score an 8-4 win over Wrighton.

Consolation action is slated to begin Saturday at 9 a.m. Virgil would face East Surry’s Eli Becker, the Midwest Regional champion, in the consolation semifinals with a win.
