Preston Burnett and Trey Thompson highlighted a successful day for Polk County wrestling, each qualifying for next week’s state tournament with their showing Saturday at the 1A West Regional in Robbinsville.
Burnett fought through the consolation bracket in the 126-pound class to a third-place finish while Thompson battled to a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds, both earning a berth in the state 1A tournament that begins Friday at the Greensboro Coliusem.
The two wrestlers are the first from Polk County to qualify for the state tournament since Chase Emory in 2015.

Polk County’s team, meanwhile, placed ninth in the 25-team field. Both Collier Foster at 106 pounds and Brennan Worthington at 132 pounds reached the consolation semifinals, falling just one win short of a trip to the state tournament.
Western Highlands Conference foe Avery earned the 1A West Regional team title, finishing with 208 points, just ahead of Robbinsville’s 200.5 Swain (182.5), Mount Airy (105) and East Wilkes (101) rounded out the top five.
