The opening day of the 1A West Regional wrestling tournament proved a very good one for Polk County.
The Wolverines had seven wrestlers advance to the semifinal round of the regional tourney at Cherryville High School, putting each one win away from qualifying for next week’s state 1A tournament. Twelve of Polk County’s 13 wrestlers won at least one match Friday, helping the Wolverines finish the day in second place in the team standings, trailing only Mount Airy.
Action continues Saturday at Cherryville. Wrestlers must finish in the top four in their weight class to qualify for the state meet, which begins Thursday in Greensboro.

Polk’s semifinalists include Efrain Rivera, Amon Villarreal, Brody Wolfe, Jacob Ed, Styler Blackwell, Zalen McCraw and Chester Wilson. Rivera won both of his matches by pin, as did Wilson.
Wolverines remaining alive in the consolation bracket include Cole Huntley, Liam Jackson, Jaxtyn Virgil, Connor Ahlert, Carson Bell and Donte Tingling.
Mount Airy has 78 points, with Polk County following at 68.5. Alleghany is in third with 61 points, followed by Avery at 49 and Robbinsville at 48.
