Polk wrestlers nip Cherokee to earn split of tri-match

Polk County split its third tri-match of the season on Tuesday, edging Cherokee 31-30 before falling to a solid North Henderson squad 60-24 in non-conference wrestling action at Polk County.

The Wolverines, with several football-playing starters not scheduled to begin competing until next week, improved to 3-3 on the season. Four of the six matches have been against 3A and 4A schools.

“If you told me we’d be 3-3 with half of our team not out yet, I would have taken that any time,” said Polk County head coach Phillip Miller. “I’m really not disappointed with 3-3. You’ve got to be happy with that.”

The Wolverines nipped Cherokee on a tiebreaker after finishing the match tied at 30. Polk County won one more match than did Cherokee, and that earned the Wolverines an extra team point and the win.

Chase Emory helped deliver the Polk win, earning a 4-3 decision over Anthony Toineeta in the final match of the night at 145 pounds. Building a 4-0 lead after two periods, Emory then hung on to pick up the three points that the Wolverines needed for the team win.

Dustin Calvert opened the match with a 10-6 decision over Jaron Bradley at 152 pounds. The Wolverines then got forfeit wins at 160 and 170, with Dillion Elliott pinning Andrew Griffin at 195 points to give Polk County a 21-0 lead in the match.

Triston Watkins won by forfeit at 106 for the Wolverines’ other match win.

Against a North Henderson squad that features 113-pound standout Mitchel Langford, now 152-2 for his career, Polk took an early 6-0 lead as Chandler Patrick won by pin at 170. The Knights then won four straight matches before Watkins also scored a pin, opening the second period with a quick move and pinning Connor Wilderman in 12 seconds. North then reeled off six straight wins, four of those by forfeit, before Emory was injured in the 145-pound match and had to forfeit.

Calvert broke the string with a pin of Juan Chavez at 152, keeping Calvert unbeaten this season with a 6-0 record. Anthony Marino then dominated his match at 160 before finally pinning Marco Perez with four seconds left in the match.

The Wolverines will be back in action on Saturday, taking part in the North Knight Invitational at North Henderson. Miller said a number of his younger wrestlers would compete in the junior varsity field, with a handful taking part in the varsity tourney.
