Polk wrestlers, minus a few, split season-opening matches with Swain, Chase

New Polk County wrestling coach Scott Taylor only had about half his team available Tuesday for his Wolverine debut.

Taylor liked what he saw from those present.

The Wolverines split a pair of matches with Swain and Chase, falling 54-24 to the Maroon Devils before bouncing back to take a 36-30 win over the Trojans.

With Polk County’s football team among those still in season, the Wolverines only fielded wrestlers in eight classes, and only two wrestlers competed in the win over Chase as the Trojans forfeited six weight classes to give Polk the win.

But the Swain match offered a glimpse of the potential this season for Polk as Satchel McCoy and Collier Foster earned wins by decision and Bryson McCraw scored a pin at 152 pounds.

“I thought we wrestled as well as we could for the first match with half a team,” said Taylor. “We’re still missing a few as well as the football players.

“That’s hurting us in not having enough practice partners, but we’re still working hard. We didn’t have any seniors wrestling tonight, just juniors and freshmen.”

Polk County is slated to return to action on Thursday, traveling to Hendersonville to face the Bearcats and Rosman.
