Polk County's Amon Villarreal

Polk County’s Jadyn Virgil reached the 1A state semifinals before falling into the consolation bracket, joining four other Wolverines there after the opening day of the state 1A wrestling tourney in Greensboro.

All five Polk County wrestlers will continue action Saturday in the consolation bracket.

Virgil won his opening match in the 215-pound class, pinning Eastern Randolph’s Maddox Carson. He then encountered Pamlico County’s Tyler Stevens in the semifinals. Virgil built lead in the second period, including points for a near fall. But Stevens was able to escape, take down Virgil and record a pin with 11 seconds left in the period.

Each of the other Wolverine state qualifiers were defeated in their opening matches:

  • Freshman Brody Wolfe lost a tough 4-2 decision to North East Carolina Prep’s Colton Lewis, the East Regional champion at 113 pounds.
  • Sophomore Amon Villarreal fell to Albemarle’s Christian Harris in the 120-pound class on a fall in the final minute of the match.
  • Thomasville’s Eriberto Torres pinned Polk freshman Styler Blackwell in their 157-pound match.
  • Sophomore Zalen McCraw dropped a 9-4 decision to Uwharrie Charter’s Caden Bond in the 175-pound division.

As for other Mountain Foothills 7 Conference schools competing in the 2A tourney, Brevard saw two wrestlers reach Saturday’s championship matches, with Jaxon Turner advancing at 165 pounds and Ray Laney doing the same at 190 pounds. R-S Central also qualified two wrestlers for state title matches, with Gunner Horton advancing in the 132-pound class and Caleb Cox doing the same at 150 pounds.
