Polk County’s Harrison Waddell completes a win over East Rutherford’s Sam Hopkins to assure Polk of a team victory.

Polk County’s Harrison Waddell had quite a Wednesday.

The sophomore took second place in the shot put in Polk’s season-opening indoor track meet, then hustled up to the gym and earned a pair of victories on the wrestling mat, including a pin of East Rutherford’s Sam Hopkins that clinched a victory for the Wolverines.

Polk County defeated Owen 51-21 in its first match of the night before edging East Rutherford 42-35, giving the Wolverines a 4-0 record in dual meets thus far this season.

The match with Western Highlands Conference rival Owen wasn’t a conference battle, but the Wolverines will look forward to the rematch after a dominant effort. Polk County built a 33-0 lead thanks to six straight wins to open the match, then closed with victories in three of the final four contests.

The East Rutherford match was close throughout, and the Cavaliers grabbed a 35-24 lead after the 195-pound match. Polk County knew a forfeit win at 106 pounds still awaited, but the Wolverines still had to win the last two contested matches in order to take a team triumph.

Trey Thompson delivered his second pin of the night, winning at 220 pounds, before Waddell stepped onto the mat. The sophomore aggressively grabbed the upper hand, and a near pin of Hopkins brought the entire Wolverine bench to its feet and to the edge of the mat.

Waddell got that pin a few moments later, securing Polk’s fourth win of the season.

Polk County will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to East Henderson for a day of dual meets at the War Eagle Duals.
