Polk County’s wrestling team finished Friday’s first day of the EB Memorial at Mallard Creek in second place among 39 schools.
The Wolverines scored 27.5 points, trailing only Trinity’s 39. Mallard Creek (23.5), Tallwood (22) and Cox Mill (19) rounded out the top five.
Liam Jackson (132) finished 2-0 for the day, posting a 15-1 major decision over West Charlotte’s David Works and winning by forfeit over Providence’s Philip Mendat.

Four Wolverines won their only matches of the day. Carson Bell (157) defeated Weddington’s Daniel Mikes 3-0 while Brody Wolfe (150) edged South Rowan’s Kaden Thompson 3-0. Amon Villarreal (126) defeated Indian Land’s Mason Thomas by technical fall, 17-0, and Jayden Pons (120) downed Providence’s Anthony Barney 7-0.
Connor Ahlert (138) and Tanner McKinney (285) each finished 1-1. Ahlert fell to Jay M. Robinson’s Matthew Najera 13-6 before defeating Concord’s Juan Trejo 6-0. McKinney lost to Charlotte Catholic’s William Johnson 17-4 by major decision before edging Bradford Prep’s Kiel Frederick 2-1 in overtime.
Several other Polk wrestlers will begin action on Saturday as the tournament holds its final day.
