Polk County’s wrestling team will face Mount Airy in Tuesday’s quarterfinals of the NCHSAA 3A Dual Team Tournament at Wheatmore High School.
The third-seeded Wolverines (33-5) take on the No. 2 Mount Airy Bears (24-1), a program well-acquainted with deep postseason runs. Last season, Mount Airy won the 1A West Regional dual team title before moving up to 3A, defeating Robbinsville in the regional final – the same Robbinsville team that eliminated Polk County in the 1A state quarterfinals.
The winner will face either No. 1 Lincolnton or No. 5 West Lincoln in the 3A West semifinal, with the West bracket champion advancing to the state championship match against the winner of the East bracket, which includes Trinity, Ayden-Grifton, Eastern Randolph and Wheatmore.

Quarterfinals, semifinals and the state final will all be wrestled Tuesday, with gates opening at 4 p.m. and wrestling beginning at 4:30 p.m. Competition will take place on two mats in Wheatmore’s main gym and two mats in the auxiliary gym. All fans will enter through the main gate.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased with cash at the gate or in advance through GoFan. NCHSAA passes and Senior Tarheel cards are the only passes accepted.
