A challenging path still awaits Polk County Middle in its quest to repeat as Blue Ridge Conference East Division wrestling champions.
But the Wolverines like the view they have at present to look ahead at that journey.
Polk Middle took sole possession of first place in the BRC East on Thursday, defeating Flat Rock Middle 63-38 in a clash of East co-leaders at Polk.
The Wolverines improved to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in East matches. The Eagles dropped to 3-1, 2-1.
Polk followed a familiar pattern for its latest triumph – earning four straight wins in the lower weights, then reeling off five straight victories from the 126-pound class to 170. That included a wild 17-15 decision for Sawyer Huff at 170.
The Wolverines left the gym delighted with their conference placing, but very aware that staying on top will not be easy.
“Being in the driver seat is pivotal,” said Polk head coach Jerry Cox. “We’re staying hungry and keeping the pedal down for what’s coming.”
Polk Middle returns to action on Monday, hosting Brevard Middle in a 4:30 p.m. match.
