Polk Middle sweeps tri-match to open season

New faces, familiar result.

Polk County Middle opened the 2024-25 wrestling season on Thursday with a pair of non-conference wins, defeating East Rutherford 81-24 and handing previously undefeated R-S Central Middle its first loss in a 64-42 decision.

The Wolverines, two-time defending Blue Ridge Conference champions, are looking to replace a number of starters from last year’s undefeated squad. Many of those newcomers shone in their debut.

“Proud of the team,” said Polk Middle head coach Jerry Cox. “We’re very young, starting with three sixth graders and five seventh graders, with the potential to add another sixth grader and seventh grader to the starting lineup next week to fill all the weight classes.”

Polk Middle will open its BRC slate on Monday, hosting Smoky Mountain Middle for a 4:30 p.m. match.
