Polk County earns 1A dual team playoff berth

Polk County earned a wild-card berth in the 1A dual team wrestling state playoffs and will face Mount Airy in Tuesday’s opening round.

The Wolverines (16-15) will return to the dual team playoffs for the first time since 2015, when Polk County qualified for the state 2A tournament and suffered a 60-18 loss to Hunter Huss in the opening round.

The first-round match will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Robbinsville High School. The winner will then wrestle Robbinsville, which received a first-round bye, at 7:30 p.m.

Mount Airy (18-9) enters as the second seed from the Northwest 1A Conference. The Bears had won six straight Northwest regular-season titles until falling to South Stokes this season. Mount Airy did rebound and win the conference tournament.
