Polk County’s wrestling team finished second at Wednesday’s Jet Invitational at Enka High School, just 2.5 points behind champion R-S Central.
The Wolverines scored 171.5 points, while the Hilltoppers claimed the team title with 174.0. Piedmont (167.5), Enka (143.5) and Madison (127.5) rounded out the top five in the 15-team field.
Polk County claimed two individual championships and six other top-six finishes.

Amon Villarreal (132) and Zalen McCraw (175) each won their weight classes. Villarreal went 3-0 on the day, pinning Ayden Laws of R-S Central in the quarterfinals, defeating Tuscola’s Aydan Mull 7-3 in the semifinals and pinning Madison’s Alexander Cecil in the championship match.
McCraw also went 3-0, pinning Fred T. Foard’s Ryder Eckard in the quarterfinals, stopping Freedom’s Kayden Bowman in the semifinals and claiming the title with a pin of Piedmont’s Will Porter.
Brody Wolfe (150) and Styler Blackwell (190) each finished second. Wolfe pinned Fred T. Foard’s Josiah Yang in the quarterfinals and posted an 11-1 major decision over Piedmont’s Garret Engel in the semifinals before falling to Tuscola’s Micah Howard in the championship match. Blackwell pinned Robbinsville’s Cyrus Crowe in the semifinals before dropping a 10-1 major decision to Fred T. Foard’s Logan Mumy in the finals.
Isaiah Staley claimed third place at 215 pounds, defeating Enka’s Ryan Luther by pin in the third-place match after Luther had pinned him in the quarterfinals. Staley also pinned Clyde A. Erwin’s Maury Amida and edged Avery County’s Maverick Mora in the consolation semifinal.
Silas Amorelli (106), Liam Jackson (126) and Jaxtyn Virgil (144) each finished fourth. Amorelli pinned Freedom’s Zenen Sigmon in the quarterfinals and Swain County’s Deagon Ledford in the consolation semifinal before falling to R-S Central’s Aiden Dalton by major decision in the third-place match. Jackson pinned North Buncombe’s Nolan Lozano, posted an 18-5 major decision over Tuscola’s Michael Lettner and edged Mountain Heritage’s Bodhi Glover in the consolation semifinal before losing to Piedmont’s Lucas Belk by major decision.
Virgil went 3-2 on the day, defeating Erwin’s Brian Sanchez-Munoz by technical fall, pinning Fred T. Foard’s Reece Wilson and stopping Tuscola’s Zachary Duncan before falling to Robbinsville’s Devin Hall by pin in the third-place match.
Zachary McCraw placed fifth at 165 pounds, pinning Enka’s Eric LaBounty in the quarterfinals before falling to R-S Central’s Hunter Feagan. McCraw defeated Owen’s Mason Wheeler in sudden victory in the fifth-place match.
Conner Ahlert finished sixth at 138 pounds, pinning Erwin’s Hayden Gregory in the consolation rounds.
In the JV division, Polk County finished second with 83 points behind champion Enka’s 177.5.
The Wolverines claimed two individual championships in the JV division. Jayden Pons (126) went 3-0 on the day, defeating Madison’s LA Sesena by technical fall in the quarterfinals, pinning R-S Central’s Jakoby Houser in the semifinals and claiming the title with a pin of Freedom’s Mason Beach.
Alex Labreche (144) also won his weight class, going 3-0 with two decisions and one pin. Labreche pinned Freedom’s Chad Miller in the quarterfinals, edged Enka’s Caleb Foster 7-0 in the semifinals and defeated Enka’s Kaleb Soto 7-3 in the championship match.
Riley Morgan (144) and Andy Serrano (165) each finished third. Morgan went 4-1 on the day, winning four matches by pin and one by major decision after falling to Enka’s Kaleb Soto in the quarterfinals. Serrano went 3-1, pinning Freedom’s Christian Chapman in the quarterfinals and the third-place match before falling to Enka’s Andrew McKinley in the semifinals.
