Polk County’s wrestling program opened the 2022 season with a busy two days of wrestling, competing Thursday in a tri-match at East Rutherford before traveling Saturday to the Maroon Devil Invitational in Bryson City.
On Thursday, the Wolverines defeated East 54-30 and dropped a 45-34 decision to Crest. Obed Najera had two on-mat wins to lead Polk County’s efforts at East, giving the Wolverines a 1-1 dual match record.
On Saturday, Polk’s Jaydn Virgil placed second in the boys varsity 182-pound class and Megan Allison earned second in the girls 144-148 class to pace Wolverine wrestlers. Virgil reached the championship match before dropping an 8-2 decision to Rosman’s Jeshua Whited while Allison went 2-1 in the round-robin class, losing only to Swain’s Tasia Neadeau.

Several Polk wrestlers also competed Saturday in round-robin junior varsity action. Alex Martin and Amon Villarreal were each undefeated in three matches in that competition.
Polk County returns to action on Wednesday, competing in the North Knight Invitational at North Henderson.
