Monster win: Polk Middle doubles up Rugby to complete regular season
Polk County Middle’s wrestling team delivered a big finish on a big stage.
The Wolverines had the opportunity Thursday to wrestle on the “monster mat” at West Henderson High School, the Falcons’ massive wrestling mat that measures 56 by 67 feet. With a high school match to follow, fans packed West Henderson’s gym, giving Rugby Middle a definite homecourt advantage.
But Polk Middle responded with a 72-36 victory over Rugby, clinching a 6-6 record and giving the Wolverines a sweep this season of the Raiders.
The Wolverines scored wins throughout the lineup, building an early 24-0 lead and never giving up the lead as the large stage didn’t deter their focus on reaching the .500 mark for the year.
“A fitting way to end a foundational year,” said Polk Middle head coach Jerry Cox. “Five of our kids didn’t win the first time we faced this team, but came out and won this time.”
Polk Middle will now begin preparations for the Blue Ridge Conference individual tournament, set for Feb. 1 at Pisgah High School in Canton.
