Mitchell wrestlers subdue Polk; Wolverines also fall to Avery

Mitchell boasts one of the top wrestling programs in Western North Carolina, ranked second in the latest RetroRankings.com 1A state team poll and boasting six wrestlers in RetroRankings’ individual state listings.

The Mountaineers put all of that talent on display Wednesday against Polk County, posting a 70-6 win over the Wolverines in a Western Highlands Conference match in Bakersville. Polk also wrestled Avery while in Bakersville and dropped a 51-19 decision to the Vikings.

Heavyweight Chase McMurray scored the only points of the evening against Mitchell for Polk, pinning Todd Self. McMurray also won by pin against Avery, one of five Wolverines to record wins in the match. Ryan Badger earned a decision at 182, Chase Emory notched a major decision at 126, Anthony Marino recorded a win by decision at 145 and Damion Cantrell earned a win by decision at 170.

The Wolverines will wrestle again on Friday, hosting Owen at 6 p.m. in a match rescheduled from its original Jan. 14 date due to exams.
