Forfeits help spoil Polk County’s shot to knock off Mitchell
Take away four forfeits Thursday and Polk County might have scored a huge Western Highlands Conference wrestling win.
The Wolverines dropped a 42-33 decision to Mitchell at Gardner-Webb University, nearly knocking off a program that has been one of the conference’s best in recent seasons.
Polk County got wins by pin from Tori Strickland, Collier Foster, Preston Burnett, Gage McSwain and Trey Thompson, with Burnett venturing up to 138 pounds for his victory. Satchel McCoy also picked up a 7-6 decision at 132 pounds.
But the Mountaineers earned four straight wins in the middle weights and added those 24 points by forfeit to seal the win.
Polk County returns home Saturday to host the Wolverine Duals, that event beginning at 9 a.m.
